Fresh urine may have some odor, but the strong, lingering malodor usually develops as urine sits, dries, gets rewetted, and is metabolized by bacteria in the environment. Urine contains water, urea, uric acid, creatinine, salts, electrolytes, and other waste compounds. As urine sits, bacteria can break down urea and create ammonia-type odors; veterinary references also associate strong ammonia odor with urease-producing bacteria.  

The main odor contributors are:

1. Urea breakdown into ammonia
Urea is a nitrogen-rich waste compound in urine. Environmental bacteria produce enzymes such as urease that break urea down, creating ammonia. That is the sharp “old urine” smell most people recognize.  

2. Organic waste trapped in surfaces
In pet relief areas, urine does not just sit on top. It moves into turf backing, seams, infill, gravel, decomposed granite, concrete pores, pavers, drainage layers, and shaded wet spots. Turf odor problems are commonly linked to pet urine, organic debris, infill/backing buildup, insufficient cleaning frequency, and drainage issues.  

3. Rewetting and heat reactivating odor
In the southwest especially, heat accelerates odor release. Then irrigation, rain, hose rinsing, or humidity can rewet dried urine residues and bring the odor back. That is why an area can smell “fine” one day and terrible the next morning after irrigation.

4. Microbial VOCs
Bacteria and other microorganisms produce volatile organic compounds as part of metabolism, including fatty-acid derivatives, nitrogen-containing compounds, and sulfur compounds. These can add sour, rotten, fecal, skunky, or musty notes beyond simple ammonia.  

5. Feces and other organic material
Apartment pet areas do not only receive urine. They also get feces residue, vomit, food waste, hair, saliva, and soil contamination. Those materials add proteins, fats, and other organics that bacteria can break down into additional malodors.

Regular cleaning usually removes visible waste.

It often does not remove the odor source trapped deeper in the surface system. “Your maintenance team may be cleaning what they can see. The odor is often coming from what is trapped below the surface.”

This is especially true with artificial turf because urine passes through the blades and into the backing, infill, seams, and drainage layers. If the turf system does not drain or flush well, the odor source stays there and keeps cycling.

A biological odor-control product is logical because the odor problem itself is biological and organic.
